Who’s been performing at St Matthias?
St Matthias Church has become one of the happening places to hold music events or shoot videos because of its fabulous acoustic and magnificent interior.
In 2024, St Matthias Church provided the backdrop for music videos for widely praised indie band Desperate Journalist, and emerging singer songwriter Ella Jinks.
In October 2024 St Matthias Church hosted FrequencyLDN in an awe-inspiring immersive sonic experience created live by incredible musicians including Arun Ghosh, Raven Bush, Nikita Gill and Chloe Chousmer-Kerr.
In 2024, St Matthias Church also provided the setting for contemporary classical ensemble Casimir Connection‘s album launch.
Previously we were the location for a candlelit FKA Twigs Tiny Desk concert : a performance by singer / songwriter Hattie Briggs : we hosted New Zealand singer/songwriter Naomi Ludlow (Ny Oh) : we were the setting for a Radio 1 piano session with Phoebe Bridgers and singer/songwriter Arlo Parks performing Radiohead’s Fake Plastic Trees, plus hosted live concerts by musician, songwriter, classical pianist – and doctor by day – Ajimal.
St Matthias has also starred in indie rock band Sundara Karma’s The Changeover , and London-based singer songwriter Kaine Francesco filmed Lovely People from his new album Up High, an eclectic mix of baroque acoustic and electro-pop.
Other performers include African fusion band The Ganda Boys, and folk pop singer Hattie Whitehead.
In the classical music world Her Ensemble string orchestra are regular visitors. We’ve been the setting for recordings by Australian singer/songwriter Josef Salvat , composer and guitarist Pete Walton , Swedish pianist and composer Henrik Lindstrandt , multi-award winning film composer and pianist Nico Casal (whose credits include the score for the 2016 Oscar winning short film Stutterer) and classical singer Daniel Thomson, who said: “St Matthias Church was a wonderful church to sing in! As well as being a beautiful, it had a brilliant acoustic, excellent lighting and good heating. It was really ideal for recording in as there was zero traffic noise from outside. I would definitely use this venue again for future recordings.”
In the concert world we’re also regular hosts to live performances by community choirs, including east London institution, the 150-strong Hackney Singers, world music a cappella choir the Wing-It Singers, Hackney Harmony and our resident community choir Chorus of Dissent whose sell-out fundraising concerts bring the house down.
We also host concerts with St Matthias Music – who also curate music at St Pancras Old Church.
We’re also used as a film and television location…see Killing Eve.
